How It All Started

My journey into US home office tax deductions began with someone very close to me—my cousin.

Several years ago, my cousin moved to the United States and started working as a freelance graphic designer. Like many self-employed Americans, he found tax forms confusing and overwhelming. He'd call me frustrated: "David, these IRS forms are so complicated. I don't know what I can deduct. I'm afraid of making a mistake."

I started helping him research. I'd read IRS publications, study Form 8829 instructions, and explain things in simple terms. Over several tax seasons, we figured it out together. That experience changed everything.

I realized that millions of self-employed Americans struggle with the same confusion. IRS documents are accurate but hard to understand. Clear, researched explanations can make a real difference. My cousin has successfully claimed home office deductions every year since—and the methods I learned helping him are the foundation of every guide on this site.

My Research Journey

That personal experience sparked a deeper passion. For the past 10+ years, I've dedicated myself to understanding US home office tax rules inside and out.

2014

Started helping my cousin with his first home office deduction. Began studying IRS Publication 587 and Form 8829.

2015-2018

Expanded research to cover all aspects of self-employment taxes. Read hundreds of IRS publications and tracked annual changes.

2019

Started Tax-Clean.com to share research with other self-employed Americans. Published first comprehensive guides.

2020-2023

Helped over 50,000 readers understand home office deductions. Continuously updated content for tax law changes.

2024-2026

Focused on 2024-2026 tax updates. Expanded guides to cover new rules, deadlines, and strategies.

Today, I spend hundreds of hours each year analyzing IRS publications, tracking legislative changes, and testing tax software—all so I can provide the most accurate, helpful information possible.

My Research Process

How I Ensure Accuracy

Every article on this site follows the same rigorous process I developed while helping my cousin:

  1. Start with official sources – I go directly to IRS.gov, Publication 587, Form 8829 instructions, and official updates.
  2. Cross-verify everything – I check information across multiple sources. If something changed, I confirm it against IRS news releases.
  3. Translate to plain English – I remember how confused my cousin was. I write so he—and you—can understand easily.
  4. Add practical examples – I create examples based on real situations (like my cousin's home office).
  5. Cite all sources – Every claim links back to IRS.gov so you can verify it yourself.
  6. Update regularly – I review all content when tax laws change—just like I did each year for my cousin.
